Great Natural History Books and Their Creators
Published in Library Binding by Oak Knoll Books (March, 2003)
Author: Ray Desmond
Average review score:

As beautifully illustrated at it is historically informative
Jointly published by Oak Knoll Press and The British Library, Great Natural History Books And Their Creators by Ray Desmond (formerly Chief Librarian at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Deputy Keeper of the Indian office Library), is an absorbing look at the creation of trailblazing natural history references, many of which required patrons to fund the intricate effort of gathering and presenting information with true scientific accuracy. From Besler's "Hortus Eystettensis" to Audubon's "Birds of America" and Thornton's "Temple of Flora," the process behind the creation of great works is examined closely with unique revelations about the lives of those who dedicated themselves to understanding more about the natural world. A work which is as beautifully illustrated at it is historically informative, Great Natural History Books And Their Creators is an ideal selection choice for Library Memorial Fund acquisitions.

A Reference Standard
Intended to be a compendium of handouts for physicians to give to patients, Griffith's Instructions provides information on a wide variety of illnesses. From croup to tooth grinding, this book covers maladies both small, i.e. indigestion, and large, i.e. congestive heart failure, in a consistent, matter-of fact presentation. All of the perforated, pull out discussions include basic descriptions of the illness, including the frequent signs and symptoms, a brief synopsis of possible causes, risks, preventative measures, expected outcomes, and possible complications. Treatments are also discussed through both general measures and medications with notes on recommended activity and diet. The 6th edition revises and updates all of the problems that patients regularly bring to their doctors discussed in the 5th edition and adds more than twenty new ones.

Extensive appendices provide diets, including the latest food pyramid guidelines, daily values, nutrition data and specific diet regimes. There are also a plethora of diagrams and instructions for wellness, such as how to perform breast and testicular self-exams. Unlabeled diagrams of the body, ranging from eye to the endocrine system (both male and female) are also provided.

Guerrilla Hostage: 810 Days in Captivity
Published in Paperback by Fleming H Revell Co (April, 1999)
Author: Denise Marie Siino
Average review score:

A Story of Incredible Faith Under Incredible Stress
This is an amazing story of Ray Rising's 810 days of captivity by Colombian guerrillas. He is very candid about his struggles with boredom, loneliness and frustration as he was held hostage the entire time in crude shelters in the dense jungles.
Clear also is his testimony of trust in God to deliver him in the way His will would be best accomplished.
An inspiring story for all ages.

Gurps Technomancer
Published in Paperback by Steve Jackson Games (December, 1998)
Authors: Davi L. Pulver, Sean M. Punch, Dan Smith, Kurt Brugel, Ray Lunceford, David L. Pulver, and Sean Purch
Average review score:

Great sourcebook, needs more support!
The stated intent of GURPS: TECHNOMANCER was to create a world where high-tech and magic co-existed WITHOUT it being cyberpunk. TECHNOMANCER accomplishes this intent very well. The book posits a world where the Trinity nuclear test ripped open the fabric of space and produced a Hellstorm that "irradiated" a good portion of the United States, producing areas of high mana where magic could be worked by anyone with the genes to be a mage. Magical mutation produced more and more mages over time to the modern day. Now set in the present, the world of TECHNOMANCER has been indelibly stamped with the workings of magic. This has resulted in such oddities as industrial-line mages, magical spies, dragons as part of the U.S. Forces in Vietnam, flying sports carpets, and Departments of Magic in certain universities. Although it is written for the GURPS game system (you must have a copy of the GURPS Main Rules to use the mechanics in this book), the wealth of ideas in this book can be adapted to any game system. Steve Jackson Games spoke of supporting TECHNOMANCER with future supplements. I hope they do! This is an excellent sourcebook, and is probably one of their best in a while.

A Hamster in a Microwave (Nina Steel Adventures)
Published in CD-ROM by Ray Hansen (1995)
Author: Ray Hansen
Average review score:

Riveting! If you have a heart condion don't read this book.
The story starts out with what should have been a straightforward investigation of an Arthur Steel Foundation employee who had been murdered in San Diego. Never in Nina Steel's(the main character) wildest dreams did she think it would lead her to a head to head confrontation with terrorists so incredibly vindictive that nothing would stop them from achieving their goal--even each other! Once the terrorists realize Nina Steel is hunting them down, they attack her and her team with the ferocity of red fire ants. Except these ants have nuclear weapons! In the wild melee that follows Nina Steel makes a critical oversight and one of her genetically engineered counterparts is dealt a mortal blow. With all of this, it does not seem possible Nina Steel will prevail. To make matters worse, Dr. Betty Marsh, the genetic engineer who designed Nina Steel, has just finished developing a virus that could exterminate the human race and create something totally new to take its place.

A Hamster in a Microwave took me on a rocket sled ride that left not only me, but the characters a little winded by the end. Every page built the excitement at an unrelenting pace. Nina faces one deadly crisis after another and finds herself unable to save the life of a new friend. Never has Nina Steel been up against such violently cruel terrorists. Terrorists that think nothing of using a nuclear weapon to kill just one person. Furthermore, unknown to Nina Steel, Dr. Betty Marsh has broken all the rules and is working on super human technology again. This, in her plan to redesign every person on earth to create a totally new species. Can Nina Steel deal with these terrorists in time to stop Dr. Marsh? Or does Dr. Marsh already have the upper hand and will force Nina Steel to destroy humanity herself if she tries to stop the human redesign plan. This book took my breathe away. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients
Published in Hardcover by APhA Publications (29 May, 2003)
Authors: Rowe Ray, Arthur H. Kibbe, Raymond C. Rowe, Paul J. Weller, Ray Rowe, Paul Sheskey, and Paul Weller
Average review score:

Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients
This is an excellent book that contains every phamaceutical excipient that I have ever had the need to know about. I work for a dietary supplement manufacturer and we quite often get calls from customers that want to know all about all those "other ingredients" that are listed on product cartons. The book has a section for each excipient and each excipient has the following sections: Nonproprietary Names, Synonyms, Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number, Empirical Formula and Molecular Weight, Structural Formula, Functional Category, Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation or Technology, Description, Pharmacopeial Specifications, Typical Properties, stability and Storage Conditions, Incompatibilities, Method of Manufacture, Safety, Handling Precautions, Regulatory Status, Pharmacopeias, Related Substances, Comments, Specific References, General References, and Authors. While I have a background in Biology, I found several of the sections to be easy to understand by several of our employees that do not have a science background. While, still, there was highly technical/scientific information as well. Each excipient's information is contained in 2-4 pages. The book is arranged alphabetically which makes finding information easy. In addition, it contains an index that is very well constructed. For example: If you are looking for an Emulsifying Agent, the index lists all the excipients that can be used for that purpose. I can't say enough how easy this book is to use. Its information is pared down to the essential text, and is chocked full of graphs, charts and microscopic photos of the excipients.
